Val Gardena Wood Carving
The traditional Val Gardena craftwork dates back to the 17th century, when, out of economic necessity, locals began to carve simple tools or toys for daily use. Due to hard work, persistence, and skill they were able to perfect their technical abilities and merge into a creative activity producing increasingly qualitative and artistic work.
Today the art of Val Gardena wood carving spans from religious to secular to simply decorative themes.
The majority of the Val Gardena sculptors and wood carvers still produce their masterpieces exclusively by hand. These uniquely handcrafted masterpieces are guarantied by an especially created trademark – a metal plate inserted into the carving. A certificate also verifies its authenticity.
Creations from individually operating wood carvers are shown at the Exhibit of Arts and Crafts of Val Gardena which takes place at the Convention Center of Ortisei.
